Plan door to door
Start with the first session you want to attend and work backward through check-in, local transport, and the main journey. Decide whether an earlier arrival makes the trip more usable. At the other end, fit optional training around checkout and your return arrangements rather than hoping everything will line up.
Save the camp address, organizer contact, and arrival instructions in an accessible form. Confirm the final connection to the venue, not just the flight or train to the region. An unconfirmed rideshare should not be the only way your arrival works.
Choose a room for the actual schedule
Compare distance to the mats, transport at the times you need it, laundry, drying, meals, and quiet hours. A room that suits a sightseeing holiday may need additional planning for multiple training days. Private and shared accommodation can both work when they match your preferences and practical needs.
Ask what is included in a residential package and which nights it covers. For training-only events, calculate the arrangements you would genuinely book. Our complete budget guide uses a transparent hypothetical example to show how ticket and travel costs fit together.
Verify documents and activity coverage
Entry and transit requirements depend on the traveler and route. Check official information for your own circumstances before paying for nonrefundable arrangements. Teammates may have different requirements even when they attend the same camp.
Ask an insurance provider specifically about instructed BJJ, sparring, and any competition you intend to enter. The UK government’s travel insurance guidance emphasizes checking coverage for planned activities; it does not confirm a particular policy. Read the applicable wording and save the provider’s answer.
Make a complete budget
Separate registration, accommodation, meals, main travel, local transfers, laundry, optional activities, and any coverage you choose. Mark unknown costs rather than assigning them zero. Compare options using the same number of nights and a room standard you would accept.
Check when payments are due and what happens if either you or the organizer cancels. A credit, refund, and transferable ticket are different arrangements. Keep the relevant terms with your confirmations.
Leave some time unbooked
Pick priority classes, protect meal and laundry time, and choose a few off-mat activities that appeal to you. A good trip can include a quiet afternoon. Read the full training-holiday guide and manageable camp-week article before finishing your itinerary.
